At the Reiki Ranch, I’ve discovered that even the simplest tasks can become spiritual practices if we allow them to. Take stacking split firewood, for example. To most people, it might seem like a chore. But when I approach it with awareness, it transforms into a meditation. Each piece of wood has its own shape, its own history, and if you tune in closely enough, its own quiet consciousness.
When I pick up a firelog, I pause. I listen. I ask: Where would you like to be? You’d be amazed at how the wood answers back. One piece may fit snugly at the bottom, providing stability. Another may want to rest slightly angled, holding others in place. When the wood is honored and placed where it feels it belongs, the whole stack becomes stronger, balanced, and long-lasting.
On the other hand, when firewood is tossed carelessly into a pile, the stack may not endure. Wood naturally expands and contracts with the weather. A haphazard stack can tumble down with the first heavy storm. But when each log is given its rightful place, the pile stands solid through the seasons.
This way of stacking wood is more than just a technique; it’s a meditation. Time passes without struggle, and I find myself deeply connected to nature. One person once told me they had never seen wood so carefully and beautifully placed. I smiled and replied, It’s no effort when you let each piece tell you where it belongs.
How This Lesson Applies to Life
This same principle works in every part of our lives.
- Relationships: Each person has their place and purpose in the larger “stack” of community and family. When we listen and honor others, the whole group grows stronger.
- Work: Every task has its perfect timing and order. Rushing or forcing things can cause the “stack” of responsibilities to collapse, but listening and aligning with flow brings stability.
- Personal Growth: Just as logs fit together, your gifts and challenges have a place in your life story. Trust that every experience is contributing to the stability and strength of your soul’s journey.
The act of listening, whether to firewood, to people, or to Spirit, is a sacred practice. When we slow down, connect, and honor what is before us, life aligns. What seems like ordinary work becomes a spiritual dance.
So next time you face a task, whether it’s stacking firewood, folding laundry, or organizing your thoughts, try this: pause, connect, and ask, Where does this belong? You might just find that your entire life begins to “stack” itself more beautifully, piece by piece, guided by Spirit.
